World Vision and helps to improve the lives of children in the developing world by offering small loans and other financial services to families living in poverty.
About the Job:
VFI is seeking an Insurance Director. S/he will report to the VFI COO. S/he will be needed to develop a global insurance operation that can provide one or more broad based insurance products to VFI's clients.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Develop and agree on the regulatory and operating model:
- Develop product(s) that can practically be delivered;
- Work out the legal and regulatory structures that need to be in place to deliver the product(s), and who the various parties/entities would be to deliver the pieces be they in-sourced or out-sourced;
- Identify the core processes and how these would work end to end;
- Identify the technology/information requirements;
- Assess major regional and/or country differences.
- Develop business case and get approval for this new business:
- Develop a financial model for operating and capital needs based on the preferred operating model;
- Undertake a full risk assessment, covering both the insurance-based (actuarial) risks and the implementation/operating risks;
- Develop a business case and gain approval from the VFI set and board.
- Plan and implement a pilot in a small number of countries:
- Develop a plan to implement a pilot in two or three countries;
- Choose and negotiate with third party partners as required;
- Direct the set-up of insurance operations in the selected MFIs;
- Monitor/evaluate the results and develop lessons learned/best practice material.
- Roll out to the network:
- Develop standard policies, procedures, and methodologies;
- Develop risk management approach, reinsurance options, and reporting;
- Use the standards to roll out the insurance operation across the network;
- Consolidate all existing in-house and third party insurance products under the VFI global micro insurance scheme, whenever feasible;
- Train and equip the MFIs.
- Develop short term strategy for selected MFIs:
- In parallel to the above, develop a short term strategy for individual MFIs where there are third party solutions that can provide some benefits to clients;
- Support those MFIs in analysing products and negotiating with providers.
- Support raising funds for the strategy:
- Assist fundraising teams in preparing pitches to major donors and agencies such as DFID and USAID, and as necessary participating in pitches;
- Work with WV support offices to look at ways in which emergency fundraising can provide capital for insurance to provide resiliency for the poor.
Qualifications:
- Good strategic thinker and problem solver, ideally with a Science degree from a good university;
- Senior, seasoned insurance professional with experience of insurance ‘end to end’ - someone who has been at say director level in a smaller organization may be preferable to someone who has been a senior manager in a large organization but who may have been more silo’d;
- Experience of microinsurance in a developing country;
- Experience of running a large project;
- Hands-on. Ability to work on own but know when to report back or seek guidance;
- Strong communicator, both verbal and written, to audiences and one-on-one.
