Organizational Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Accounts Unit of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension

Fund (UNJSPF). The incumbent reports to a senior staff member of the Section.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Accounting Assistant will be responsible for the following

duties:


  • Records and reconciles more complex accounting transactions.
  • Examines and records pension contribution remittances from member organizations.
  • Reconciles more complex bank accounts in various currencies.
  • Assists in the processing of pension contribution reporting from UNJSPF member organizations. This includes, amongst other things, calculating, inputting, and checking pension contributions for correctness and communicating discrepancies to supervisors.
  • Assists in recovering pension overpayments from beneficiaries, and reissuing unclaimed cheques.
  • Assists in calculating contribution amounts for pension validation/restoration.
  • Drafts/prepares memoranda and/or faxes to various offices, departments and overseas offices.
  • Responds to queries from pension participants, beneficiaries, member organizations and other units/sections.
  • Performs other duties as may be required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

Five years of experience in accounting, finance or related area. Proficiency in PC software, especially spreadsheet and word-processing is required. Some experience in an employee benefit scheme or a payroll related field is desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the high school or secondary school diploma.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Method

Short-listed candidates may complete a competency-based interview and written assessment.

Passing the United Nations Accounting Assistant Examination in New York is a prerequisite for this position.

Passing the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations.
