Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)/ Division for Social Policy and Development - Youth, internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.

The internship is UNPAID and full time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  •     Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents and papers
  •     Inputting to the preparation of the monthly Youth Flash publication
  •     Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings relevant to the work of the Division on youth issues
  •     Conducting research on policy related issues and monitoring developments in the youth field
  •     Assisting in the preparation of meetings; preparing materials, taking minutes, and other logistical elements where necessary
  •     Assisting in managing and updating social media outreach tools – facebook, twitter, website
  •     Assisting in the preparation and drafting of speeches for colleagues and senior staff
  •     Responding to and managing inquiries and requests from civil society and the public

The intern is expected to:
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; and

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Although not necessary, it is desirable if the intern has experience or knowledge of youth related issues.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York

Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

    Applicants must be enrolled a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher); or
    If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of fullâ€time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
    Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
