IREX is actively seeking an Accounting Manager to report to its Chief Financial Officer and be based in its Washington, DC office.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years’ experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory role, working with mid-to-large size not-for-profit organizations that receive significant federal grants, and/or working with public accounting firms specializing in not-for-profits. This person will be responsible for managing all accounting activities, including providing analytical support to the IREX Chief Financial Officer and other organizational executives. The candidate will have prior experience using Deltek and will bring hands-on experience and solid understanding of general ledger account reconciliations, proper revenue recognition, grants accounting, financial reporting, year-end close and annual audit process and filings in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
Accounting Oversight
- Manages all accounting activities, including providing analytical support to IREX CFO and other executives, as requested
- Addresses and resolves all accounting issues and/or serves as liaison for cross-unctional team resolution
- Prepares for and manages annual audit process
- Possesses familiarity with IRS 990 reporting requirements and assists with compliance and filings
- Updates and maintains all department accounting and internal control procedures
- Manages direct and indirect accounting systems and report generation
- Prepares/reviews account analyses and reconciliations timely and accurately with proper approvals and performs monthly and annual close
- Manages cash balances and cash flows, including processing weekly USG funding draws and preparation of 272 Federal grant reporting
- Reviews and approves all payroll related transactions prior to posting into GL
- Reviews and approves all G/L reconciliations or adjustments
- Calculates and records monthly revenue recognition including proper deferred revenue and receivable balances
- Manages chart of accounts
- Liaises with accounting software company and consultants
- Liaises with IREX US corporate bank
- Oversees relationship with A/P outsource provider to ensure prompt and accurate processing
- Develops and oversees effective invoicing process for timely reimbursement to IREX for contracts and grant revenue
Financial Analysis
- Reviews and approves financial reports to grantors and reconciles to the general ledger prior to submission
- Reviews quarterly federal 425 reports for CFO signature
- Participates in and oversees financial reviews of IREX field offices, as requested
- Prepares materials as needed for IREX Board including corporate financial statements
Staff Development
- Provides coaching, mentoring, and leadership to accounting team
- Directly supervises and provides hands-on guidance to the Senior Accountant and Accounts Payable Supervisor
- Identifies opportunities to reduce cost or lower expenses through industry trends in innovation and/or technology
- Travels to field offices as requested (up to 25%)
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory role, working with mid-to-large size not-for-profit organizations that receive significant federal grants, and/or working with public accounting firms specializing in not-for-profits
- BS in Accounting required, MBA preferred
- CPA Designation required
- Knowledge and prior use of Deltek required, Costpoint preferred
- Knowledge and experience with GAAP, OMB Circular A-133 and A-122, subgrants, contracts, indirect cost rates, indirect cost pools and allocations
- Hands-on experience and solid understanding of general ledger account reconciliations, proper revenue recognition, grants accounting, financial reporting, year-end close and annual audit process and filings in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
- · Ability to demonstrate broad conceptual judgment, initiative and ability to deal with complex accounting issues
- Prior experience developing accounting teams to ensure department goals are aligned with corporate goals and strategy
- High degree of analytical and organizational skills required
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work effectively across borders and cultures
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications
