The Wiener Library is seeking an experienced Development Director to join our diverse team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast growing institution that has a long-established history as the world’s oldest Holocaust archive. In the last three years, The Wiener Library has acquired new modern premises and expanded its activities significantly to include a full educational outreach department and access to the International Tracing Service digital archives.
The Development Director will oversee the continued growth of the organisation including responsibility for fundraising to secure the £2 million required for the long-term sustainability of the Library’s ‘Keeping Truth Alive’ programme, currently funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. We are seeking a candidate who will be comfortable formulating strategic goals and implementing initiatives with energy and passion, focusing particularly on major donors. This is an ideal opportunity for a self-assured, focused and articulate individual who thrives on challenge and values collaborative working.
Job Purpose
To support the exciting next phase of the Library’s development, including the need to secure £2 million by January 2016, in order to make the Library’s Keeping Truth Alive programme, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund sustainable for the long term. To devise and implement a robust systematic approach to fundraising and associated communications. As the Library’s only specialist fundraising post, the Development Director will be equally comfortable formulating strategic goals and implementing initiatives with energy and passion, focusing particularly on major donors. As a member of the management team the Development Director will share general management responsibility, working closely with senior colleagues to maximise delivery on the Library’s mission.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Major Donor Programme
- To lead the process, working with the Director, trustees and senior volunteers, of identifying and meeting potential major donors.
- To support the Director, trustees and senior volunteers in their relationships with new and existing major donors, by coordinating activities, and providing tailored communications and on-going updates.
Strategic
To design and implement fundraising and communications activities and events, focusing on high net worth individuals and other major donors.
To identify and deliver opportunities for new fundraising.
Individual Giving
To oversee and manage the Library’s individual giving programmes, and to develop and implement a cost effective strategy to increase the number of regular committed givers.
General Fundraising
To ensure that existing and future grant conditions are fulfilled and accurately reported.
To submit imaginative and persuasive funding applications, and to ensure that the Library has the capacity to complete such applications: this may include outsourcing or supervising volunteers.
To ensure that legacies are properly administered, communicating with legatee representatives and taking legal advice as appropriate.
To keep up to date with the external fundraising environment, including Government funding opportunities, and relevant changes in legislation.
Communication
To support the Director, colleagues and trustees in effectively communicating the fundraising strategy and work of the Library to existing and new audiences.
Person Specification
Experience & Skills
- Exceptional relationship building, networking and management skills.
- Experience of managing a wide range of fundraising streams and of developing and implementing creative fundraising strategies that achieve targets.
- Proven experience of working successfully with influential individuals to secure significant gifts and support.
- First class communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to write persuasively and present a compelling oral case.
- Demonstrable ability to be a ‘player manager’ i.e. retaining a strategic overview of the Library’s work whilst delivering practical results.
- Excellent people skills: able to work collaboratively and proactively with Library colleagues, trustees, and volunteers.
Knowledge/training required
- Ideally educated to degree level or equivalent.
- IT literate and competent in all Microsoft Office packages.
- Understanding of how to use all media effectively in fundraising and communications.
- Knowledge of the specific approaches required towards individual giving.
