Summary:
Enough, a project of the Center for American Progress, has an immediate opening for a Policy Associate. The Policy Associate will be responsible for researching the political and conflict dynamics primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and secondarily in areas affected by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), analyzing U.S. government, international, and corporate policy related to these conflicts, and contributing to Enough’s strategy papers, reports, and other publications. This is a position requiring research and report-writing experience, strong analytical skills, good interpersonal skills, and a strong understanding of conflicts in central Africa.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct original research primarily on Congo, both in Washington, DC and the field. Co-author, author, and edit policy and advocacy reports, memos, and other documents.
- Build relationships with partner organizations, participate in multi-stakeholder fora, and liaise occasionally with officials in the U.S. government, to gather timely – and occasionally, rapid response – information for conflict analysis and report-writing.
- Regularly liaise with field staff and consultants, and work collaboratively to set a research agenda for the Congo and LRA affected areas.
- Represent Enough at Congo and LRA meetings and events, both in and outside Washington, DC.
- Collaborate with advocacy and campaign staff to help shape Congo and LRA campaign messaging and policy recommendations.
- Assist with administrative and organizational tasks for the policy and advocacy team as necessary.
- Assist with report production as necessary.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Strong academic background and/or work experience in prevention of atrocities, human rights, conflict prevention and resolution, and responsibility to protect.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Experience writing and editing for blogs and other online publications is an advantage.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Congo and LRA issues and ability to provide in-depth analysis and write professionally.
- Previous field experience in Congo a major plus.
- Strong understanding of the policy-making community and the potential implications of various advocacy and policy approaches.
- Adept team player with good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to research and analyze complex issues.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 2010.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Committed to the organization’s missions and goals.
- Bachelor’s degree and at least three years relevant work experience in international relations, political science, or a related field.
- Master’s degree is preferred.
- Good understanding of Enough’s priority areas and demonstrated ability to write professionally on these topics.
- Some experience in corporate social responsibility and/or multi-stakeholder fora preferable.
- Knowledge of a relevant second language (e.g. French, Swahili) preferred.
