Purpose of the role:
As part of Crisis Group’s senior management, the successful candidate will coordinate the organization’s interactions with the United Nations and member states’ missions in New York; help formulate policy prescriptions and strategic advocacy initiatives to prevent or resolve deadly conflicts; develop and maintain a network of contacts within the UN system and permanent missions in furtherance of our goals; and otherwise act as the organization’s primary interface with the UN.
Specific responsibilities:
• In coordination with the President and Chief Policy Advisor, works with key policy-makers in the UN Secretariat, the Security Council and influential permanent missions to build broad-based support for Crisis Group policy positions and recommendations on country-specific, regional and thematic issues;
• Promotes Crisis Group’s visibility and impact through background briefings, advocacy memos and letters, speeches, op-eds and other means;
• Works with Programs to formulate policy recommendations and design advocacy approaches;
• Coordinates visits from Crisis Group analysts to the UN and permanent missions;
• Develops and maintains contacts at all levels within the UN system;
• Supports Crisis Group's fundraising efforts by periodically meeting with private donors and cultivating relationships with the UN missions of Crisis Group's donor governments, with the support of the development team;
• Works with relevant NGOs to promote Crisis Group recommendations and, where relevant, coordinate advocacy strategies; and,
• Follows developments in UN policy toward conflict regions and keeps Program and Project Directors informed on a regular basis.
Requirements:
• At least fifteen years of experience in conflict prevention and resolution, operating at senior levels in government, non-governmental organizations or multilateral institutions;
• Excellent knowledge of and access within the UN system;
• Extensive international experience, with broad knowledge of Crisis Group’s priority regions, especially Africa, and sensitivity toward the specifity of each conflict;
• Field experience in at least one region of the world;
• Understanding of the UN’s relationships with regional organisations;
• Demonstrated writing, editing and analytical skills and ability to formulate well-targeted policy recommendations; and,
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation skills, and a capacity for effective teamwork across globally-distributed offices.
