Background Information
Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Officer in the Development and Outreach Department. 
This position will report to the Senior Director of International Initiatives and will serve as both a liaison to the Human Rights Watch Council—HRW’s membership group of 650+ members worldwide—and a facilitator in the growth of new development and outreach initiatives for the department.

Responsibilities:
·         Project managing all aspects of Human Rights Watch’s annual Council Summit for supporters and prospective supporters, and ensuring coordination across teams working to produce the Summit. The Summit will next take place in Amsterdam in June 2014.
·         Acting as a liaison to the Human Rights Watch Council by developing and coordinating the production of content and working to enhance communication amongst Council members, including the Council Membership Guidelines, Council blog, invitations to events, and other communications.
·         Supporting the Council Steering Committee—a standing committee of the Board of Directors of Human Rights Watch—in its efforts to develop the infrastructure of the Council, enhance communications amongst Council members, and plan the annual Council Summit.
·         Assisting the senior director in the oversight of new fundraising and outreach initiatives for the department, including identifying, tracking, and supporting the development of new cities, and coordinating feasibility studies and the hiring of consultants. Recent projects have included development efforts in Belgium and Brazil.
·         Supporting development and outreach events and prospect management in new cities, including prospect research, coordinating invitations, requesting meetings, organizing cultivation events, and servicing existing donors.
·         Working closely with the senior director to develop budgets and track expenses related to the Council Summit and new departmental initiatives.
·         Creating and tracking donor lists and actions related to new cities in the Raiser’s Edge database.
·         Tracking and maintaining Council lists and Council leadership documents.
·         Preparing agendas, preparing background materials, taking minutes, and conducting follow-up to meetings.
·         Traveling domestically and internationally, as required.
·         Managing communications with constituents via phone, mail, and electronic media.
·         Advertising, recruiting, training and coordinating the work of interns.
·         Providing administrative support to the senior director and to the Development and Outreach Department, as needed.
·         Performing other responsibilities as may be required.
Qualifications
Education:  A bachelor’s degree is required.
Experience:  Minimum three to five years of fundraising experience is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
·         Experience coordinating events, preferably large-scale events, is required.
·         Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.
·         Excellent oral and written communications skills in English are required.
·         Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
·         Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is essential.
·         Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
·         An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly desirable.
